An Excerpt from the course on EMT Diabetic Emergency Care

  • As we begin to study diabetes, a sobering statistic is that 10% of the USA population is diabetic and 25% is pre-diabetic. So, please pay close attention as you will encounter Diabetic conditions in many of your calls. And, due to the breadth of information, and its importance, we are presenting Diabetes in four parts. Starting with the Pathophysiology, which is covered in the first part of this Lesson. Here we review some of the body’s systems and how glucose and insulin work together.
  • While the second part covers Diabetic Emergencies including hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.
  • Next, the assessment of Diabetic conditions will be in the third part where we will discuss blood glucose testing and monitoring. Consider that if you are unable to test to assess the emergency, err on the side of hypoglycemia. Treating this deficit might be lifesaving.
  • Finally, the fourth part covers Diabetes Patient Care.
