Missa:  Hello and Welcome; and thank you for selecting MissionCIT’s EMS Care courseware.  I am Missah, your host for the first part of this Chapter About Care for Patients with Special Challenges.

My colleague Justin and I will take turns presenting the material.

As a reminder, or in case you are starting in this chapter; most of the course materials are available via audio.  So you can listen while on the move.  The audio is intended to complement the written materials and may vary from the words in the slide deck.  More importantly, we will include some essential additional information.  So be sure to listen carefully.

We begin this chapter on Care for Patients with Special Challenges with an introduction to the subject. We subsequently explore in-depth:

• Lesson 2: Congenital, Neurological and Sensory Disabilities.
• Lesson 3: Traumatic and Bariatric Disabilities Chronic Diseases and Terminal Illness.
• Lesson 4: Environment Related challenges along with Abuse and Neglect.
• Lesson 5 covers Tracheostomy Care and Respiratory Assistance, and
• Lesson 6 discusses Technology-Assisted and Dependent Patients

The Core Concepts and takeaways from this chapter include:

• Obtain a more comprehensive grasp of the types of disabilities and challenges patients may have, including the obese and terminally ill patient.
• Be prepared for the Special aspects of prehospital care for a patient, both for a specific disability as well as any advanced medical devices they may have.
• Prepare for more of the challenges faced by EMTs in-home care and hospice environments.
• Understand how to manage a patient with a tracheostomy.
• Know more of the Types of advanced medical devices patients may rely on, and finally
• How to recognize and deal with cases of abuse and neglect, including the homeless.

We complete our studies with a Chapter Review followed by a quiz.  You will need to watch all the lessons, answer the interactive questions; and finally score a 75% grade or higher on the quiz, to get credit for this chapter.

The NREMT educational guidelines are listed in the table on this slide.  You can reference the associated EMS Care lesson where the material is found.  The content in this chapter fully covers the defined NREMT educational guidelines along with supplemental knowledge relevant to the subject matter.
